Create a Ghost Folder in XP & Vista

There are endless ways to secure data stored on your PC but here’s a really simple little trick that hides a folder and its contents by making it completely invisible.

It works best on sub folders (i.e. folders within a folder). To make a folder vanish you need to do two things, give it a name using a non-printing/displaying character then replace the standard folder icon with a blank one.

Start by opening Windows Explorer or My Computer, right click on the folder icon you want to hide and select rename. Press the Numlock key and press Alt + 0160 then OK and the name box should disappear.

Next, right-click on the folder icon and select Properties, then the Customize tab then the Change Icon button at the bottom.

You’ll find the blank icons about one click to the right on the bottom scroll bar; they’re the gaps between the normal icons. Select one then click OK.

Your folder should now have disappeared so take care you don’t forget it where it is. A ghost image or flicking hyphen will appear when you hover your mouse over where the icon used to be and you can rename or delete it by right-clicking on it.

Faster startup of Windows XP

If your computer takes a long time to become useable after starting up or logging on, or you want a clean boot of Winodws XP try this,

Click Start > Run > Type “msconfig” > On the Startup tab click Disable All and on the Services tab check the Hide All Microsoft Service box and then click Disable All.

Click Restart and Windows XP will restart with only the system services and applications running resulting in a vey fast logon / startup.

*******

N.B This tweak will disable all non-system startup sevices and applications,

so if you have anything you want to run in the background such as anti virus software do not disable that item.

How To Increase Your Internet Speed By 20%

If you use Windows XP Professional then it is possible to squeeze an extra 20% out of your internet connection. By default Windows XP Pro holds back 20% of your Internet speed for various services like windows update and spyware checks.

If you want to tap into this locked speed then make the following changes:

1. Go to Start-> Run-> and type gpedit.msc

2. Expand the Administrative Templates branch

3. Expand the Network tab

4. Highlight QoS Packet Scheduler

5. Click on Limit Reservable Bandwidth and check the ‘enabled’ box

6. Then Change the Bandwidth limit % to 0 %

Once you’ve done this click apply and restart your PC. After rebooting you should see a noticeable improvement in your net speed.

Automatic Defrag

Automatic Defrag

As you know over time the Windows filing system can become disorganised and this will eventually lead to a slow down and a reduction in performance.

‘Defragging’ the hard drive can restore order but most of us forget to do it regularly and leave it until the system has started to slow down.

Here’s a way to program Windows to automatically Defrag your drives once a month or every few weeks.

Go to Start > Control Panel and click Performance and Maintenance then Scheduled Tasks (or just go direct to Scheduled Task in Windows XP) and double-click Add Scheduled Task. This will launch the Scheduled Tasks Wizard.

Click Next then the Browse button to C:\WINDOWS\system32, click defrag.exe and select Open. Now you can give it a name and set the timings for defrag to run and when you have finished check the box ‘Open Advanced Properties …’. If there’s more than one User Account on your PC you may want to set up a Password, otherwise leave the fields blank.

To finish off in the Run line add n the drive letter for the disc you want to defrag after the command, so it should look like this: C:\WINDOWS\system32\defrag.exe c: click OK and it is set.

Single Click Shutdown

Here’s the updated version of the popular shutdown shortcut for Windows XP. Just right-click onto an empty area of the desktop then select New then Shortcut from the menu that appears. Click the Browse button and navigate your way to: C:\Windows\System32\Shutdown.exe.

Click Next, give the shortcut a name and click Finish. Now right-click the new shortcut, select Properties and in the Target box, add the command line ‘switch’ -l (to log off), -s (to shut down) or -r (to reboot). A basic shutdown shortcut command line should look like this:

C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe -s

If you want to add a 3 second delay to the Shutdown then add the ‘-t xx’ switch, thus:

C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe -s -t 03

To avoid mistakes simply copy and paste the command into the Target box. Your can also add own your own comments or text in the Shutdown box with a -c “Your text” switch.

Troubleshoot Windows Startup Issues

Suppose Windows don’t start. If it doesn’t even attempt to start — for example, if a hard disk error crops up before you see the Windows splash screen — then you’re probably looking at a hard disk problem.

But if the Windows startup process begins and then aborts, a faulty or conflicting device driver is probably the cause. This can occur because of a FAT error, or after upgrading to a new Windows version, after installing a new driver for an existing device, or after installing an entirely new device.

If Windows locks up during startup, the next time you start it, a Windows Startup menu appears offering to allow you to start in Safe Mode. (You can also call up this Windows Startup menu by pressing F8 when you see the message “Starting Windows.”) Safe Mode loads only a minimal set of drivers, so it will probably exclude the driver that is causing you problems and allow Windows to load.

If you can get into Windows through Safe Mode but not through a normal boot, it means that the problem is software-related — more specifically, that it’s related to a driver or program that is loading at startup.

The most common driver to cause problems is the video driver. If Windows locks up at the point where the chosen video mode kicks in (that is, after the splash screen but before you see the mouse pointer), an invalid video mode has probably been chosen.

Start in Safe Mode and change the video to a relatively conservative setting, such as 256-color 800×600 with Adapter Default for the refresh rate.

In a situation like the one described above — where Windows boots in Safe Mode but not in normal mode — the obvious solution is to find the item that’s causing the problem and eliminate it. This is often easier said than done, however.

One effective way of doing it is to use the Step-by-step Confirmation option on the Windows Startup menu. Press F8 as the PC is booting to display it; if you see the splash screen, you’ve missed the F8 opportunity; reboot and try again.

From that Startup menu, choose Step-by-step Conformation. Then press the Y key to step through each line of the startup. When the line executes that is causing the problem, the PC will lock up, and all you have to do is look at the last text that appeared on the screen to see which driver or program did it.

This doesn’t always work because sometimes an item that’s causing a problem will not have its own separate step in Step-by-step Confirmation. However, it can catch many driver-related errors.

Some Windows Error messages and means to avoid them

While we working in computer you may get a black blank screen with white words at that time we get confusion about, whether the file, which is not saved, may get erased so we restart the system. At that time we won’t get tension just read the message and follow the action. These errors are happening with out the CPU knowledge, some of the errors and reasons and how to avoid this are given below.

This program is not responding End now cancel

These types of errors are occurring while we get transfer the data’s frequently from program to computer. If the program got crash means you got the message as End now/ Cancel. These errors are occurs on old type of computers. Some printers work print on full page they take margin space on four types. If you got about message in Microsoft word means please give No and go to document page setup and change the margin and paper size and also view print preview before printing through this way we can avoid this error.

Modify the Windows XP System Properties logo

The Windows XP System Properties logo is often changed by computer manufacturers. Hardware vendors use this general system information dialog to brand your computer with their own logo and support contact information.

In this tip you can learn how you can insert your own logo in the system properties dialog and complete it with your own contact information.

To invoke the system properties dialog, click the Start button, right-click “My Computer” and select “Properties”.

This will open up your general system information dialog. On our Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pro laptop, the Windows XP System Properties logo looks like this:

If you want to put your own graphic in there, you should create your image in a .bmp graphic file. It’s also a good idea to create this bitmap image with the same background shade of gray (RGB: 192, 192, 192) used in the Properties dialog. Otherwise, you risk letting Windows make its own judgments regarding color contrast and background shading.

The next thing to consider is the image size. The system properties dialog only offers enough real estate for an image of about 180 (wide) x120 (high) pixels. Make sure that you can fit your logo in this area.

Once you have created your logo and saved it as a .bmp file, copy it over to the system32 subfolder of your Windows system folder. If you don’t know where your system folder is:

- Click the Start button and select “Run”

- In the “open” field, enter “cmd” (without the quotes) and click ok

- Windows will open up a dos command window

- In the command window, type “set system” (without the quotes)

- Look for the line that contains “SystemRoot”, this is where your system directory is (generally, the Windows XP system folder is c:\windows)

Now that you know where your system folder is, copy your logo image file over to the system32 subfolder of your system folder. Then rename your logo image file to oemlogo.bmp

Additionally you can create a new file in this same folder and name the new file oeminfo.ini

In this file you can enter your contact information like in the example below :

[General]

Manufacturer=Your Company Name

Model=ShowCase

[Support Information]

Line1=” ”

Line2=” For support, sales, upgrades or questions:”

Line3=”"

Line4=” Some text to demonstrate the XP System Properties logo”

Line5=” Windows XP PC ”

Line6=” Your Company Name”

Line7=”"

Line8=” +1 (888) 888-888 (voice)”

Line9=” +1 (888) 888-889 (fax)”

Line10=”"

Line11=”"

Line12=” http://www.Your Company Name.com/”

Save and close the file and you are ready. From now on, if someone opens up the system properties dialog, your own Windows XP System Properties logo is in there.

Fix problems with USB DSL/Cable modems

Some usb dsl/cable modems may get disconnected after a little while. A possible reason that could cause this problem is that in windows xp there is an option that allows the computer to turn off a usb device to save power. To disable this option:

1) click start, highlight my computer, right click and select properties and a window will pop up with the system properties

2) click on the hardware tab and press the device manager button

3) expand the universal serial bus controllers

4) Double click on the USB Root Hub.

5) Select the Power Management tab and UNTICK the “allow the computer to turn off the device to save power”

If you have more than one USB Root Hub, then you should apply the steps to each one of them

That’s it, you won’t need to restart the computer!

Problems and Tips while using USB ports

Sometimes inserting flash drive in USB port. The system didn’t recognize it how could we overcome it.

First of all we should know the two types of USB ports.

USB 1.1: This is the first type of USB. It designed as per the speed of transferring 1.5mb/sec data’s. This is designed instead of serial and parallel port for the use of USB port. This is basically used only for connecting mouse and keyboard. System would be struggled for data overloading.

USB 2.0: This kind of USB ports is used for large scale into data transfer. More readers ask that how to identify these two kind of USB ports. To identify the model use the following commands. Start=>My computer=> properties. And click Hardware tab after than select Device Manager. Now you got the list. In that list select the plus symbol that is located after “Universal Serial Bus controllers” if your system have USB 1.1 mean it displays as “Host controller (or) Open Host Controller”. Else USB 2.0 is used mean it displays like.” Enhanced host controller (or) USB 2.0 controller.

Your windows operating system says that the connected USB get speeded. When you are connecting the high speed USB to logo speed USB port of the system, but most of the reader saying that while connecting the USB device to the system. The device was not getting detected. Commonly while inserting an USB device to the system. Window XP will say new hardware found. This message will display in the hard disk. While inserting the USB device it will get auto play, and enquire whether to open the files as file (Or) audio format (Or) video format? It assigns a drive letter for it. If all the details mentioned above had not displayed means the inserted device had not matched with your operating system. You can solve this by doing below.

Go to Start => control panel =>Administrative Tools and click in administrative tool. After that double click on Computer Management.

In that left side select Disk Management, at the right side a drive displays with the name of a removable drive. This is the drive thus containing to same name of already using drive.

To change it right click on the while bar then a got a list.

Now select “change drive letters and paths”.

Now you can select the letter that you want. Click the “change” option.

The letter that you selected it should be already used one.

After finishing this you should get a warning message.

Now click ok to it.

Now close the computer management console while clicking the My computer icon.

You can see the USB drive’s letter.

We face more problems on problem on using USB port. Some part may become in accessible due to the power shortage of computer. These kinds of problems happen on USB 1.1 ports only. These problems happen only on windows 2000 and the before edition while getting these kind of problems. We just disconnect the instruments after that connect one by one.

Now a days the new version computer consists of at-least four USB ports. Two ports are fixed in backside and the remaining two parts are fixed in front side. Windows XP packages will manage these ports without any problems.

Top Tips for Buying PC Parts

Shopping for just the right gear you need to build your own PC takes time and care. The trick is to figure out the best sources for parts—whether local or mail-order. You also have to decide whether to buy all equipment from the same dealer. Here are a few pointers on this important phase of the project.

Use the Web. You can almost always find lower prices through careful Web shopping.

Develop a relationship with the "white-box" computer shops in your area. Sometimes you can get a discount that comes close to the better prices you find on the Web, and it's much more convenient.

Use price-searching Web sites. Note that some prices are artificially low, but you should still get a good idea as to the best prices. Sites like PriceGrabber (www.pricegrabber.com) and PriceWatch (www .pricewatch.com) let you sort by price, reseller, or product.

Check the satisfaction ratings of the Web outlets through services like ResellerRatings (www .resellerratings.com) before you place your order. Cheapest isn't always best if the service isn't up to par.

Try to aggregate your buying to minimize total shipping costs. Some sites will even offer free shipping for large orders.

Take advantage of software discounts. Part vendors will often sell you discounted copies of Windows and other key software when you buy a major part such as a CPU.

Understand shipping and handling costs. Some lowball resellers use high shipping costs to recoup profits.

Buy OEM versions of hardware. These are the same as the retail version—usually without the accessories or software—but they can save you money. Beware: OEM processors often have substantially reduced warranties, and they often don't ship with CPU coolers.

Watch out for restocking fees! If you have to return a defective part, the shipping charges will usually be your responsibility. Some stores charge as much as 15 percent to restock a returned item that's not defective. Unscrupulous outlets even charge a restocking fee for exchanging a defective unit.

Change DOS color

SYNTAX Sets the default console foreground and background colors.

COLOR [attr]

attr Specifies color attribute of console output

Color attributes are specified by TWO hex digits -- the first corresponds to the background; the second the foreground. Each digit can be any of the below values.

0 = Black

8 = Gray

1 = Blue

9 = Light Blue

2 = Green

A = Light Green

3 = Aqua

B = Light Aqua

4 = Red

C = Light Red

5 = Purple

D = Light Purple

6 = Yellow

E = Light Yellow

7 = White

F = Bright White

If no argument is given, this command restores the color to what it was when CMD.EXE started. This value either comes from the current console window, the /T command line switch or from the DefaultColor registry value. The COLOR command sets ERRORLEVEL to 1 if an attempt is made to execute the COLOR command with a foreground and background color that are the same.

EXAMPLE

Color 2A = Creates a green background with light bright green text, similar to many of the FTP, telnet, and old BBS console screens.

How to quit printing the page header and footer in Notepad

Using the Keyboard to Right Click

These days, using the mouse, you can right-click almost anything in almost any window or program and bring up a "context menu."

This is a small list of things that you can do to the object that you right-clicked.

For example, you can right-click a file, and choose Properties from the context menu that appears.

If you are used to using the keyboard, and try to avoid moving your hands off the keyboard to the mouse, then you will love this tip!

You can bring up the context menu on any selected item by pressing Shift-F10.

This is exactly the same as right-clicking with the mouse, and should work almost anywhere that right-clicking works.

Create a Shortcut to Lock Your Computer

Leaving your computer in a hurry but you don’t want to log off? You can double-click a shortcut on your desktop to quickly lock the keyboard and display without using CTRL+ALT+DEL or a screensaver.

To create a shortcut on your desktop to lock your computer:

Right-click the desktop.

Point to New, and then click Shortcut.

The Create Shortcut Wizard opens. In the text box, type the following:

rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation

Click Next.

Enter a name for the shortcut. You can call it "Lock Workstation" or choose any name you like.

Click Finish.

You can also change the shortcut's icon (my personal favorite is the padlock icon in shell32.dll).

To change the icon:

Right click the shortcut and then select Properties.

Click the Shortcut tab, and then click the Change Icon button.

In the Look for icons in this file text box, type:

Shell32.dll.

Click OK.

Select one of the icons from the list and then click OK

You could also give it a shortcut keystroke such CTRL+ALT+L.

This would save you only one keystroke from the normal command, but it could be more convenient.

Use your Windows Key

The Windows logo key, located in the bottom row of most computer keyboards is a little-used treasure. Don''t ignore it. It is the shortcut anchor for the following commands:

Windows: Display the Start menu

Windows + D: Minimize or restore all windows

Windows + E: Display Windows Explorer

Windows + F: Display Search for files

Windows + Ctrl + F: Display Search for computer

Windows + F1: Display Help and Support Center

Windows + R: Display Run dialog box

Windows + break: Display System Properties dialog box

Windows + shift + M: Undo minimize all windows

Windows + L: Lock the workstation

Windows + U: Open Utility Manager

Windows + Q: Quick switching of users (Powertoys only)

Windows + Q: Hold Windows Key, then tap Q to scroll thru the different users on your pc

Basic error messages you may encounter on the web.

Here are the 6 most commonly found error messages on the web, and their explanations.

ERROR 403 – Forbidden Pages

This means that you are not authorized to view the content of this site.

ERROR 404 – Not Found

This means that the site you are looking for cannot be found.

ERROR 503 – Service Unavailable

This means that normally, the page would be there, but there is a temporary problem. Try again in a minute or so.

Host Unknown

This means that the host you tried to reach is unavailable, and that there is no forwarding address.

Too Many Connections – Try Again Later

This one is pretty self-explanatory. Just click reload or Refresh until you get where you want to go.

File Contains No Data

This means that the page you are trying to go to actually exists, but nothing is there. Try back in a few minutes, they may be just updating their site at that time.

Google Search Tip

Use Quotes to Search for Phrases

If you want to search for an exact phrase on Google, such as "used car", "apple tree", or "hard drive",

it may be beneficial to place your phrase within quotes. This helps force Google to search for webpages containing the words you are looking for in your desired order.

Without the quotes, Google will probably start out returning a few queries with your words in their typed-in order, but would then start displaying resulting web pages that contain all your words but not necessarily as a phrase.

-----

SUMMARY: Force Google to treat your search query as an exact phrase as it searches the Internet.

Nine Rules for Avoiding Computer Viruses

If you're seriously interested in knowing about computer viruses, you need to think beyond the basics. This informative article takes a closer look at things you need to know about computer viruses.

A virus is a program - a piece of executable code - that has the possibly of cloning itself. Computer viruses can spread fast and they are hard to eradicate. They can be attached to any type of file and they are spread as files copied and sent from person to person. They can be contacted from a floppy disk or Cd, they can be launched when opening a program or accessing a file, any file, or they can be brought from the internet by downloading a file or accessing a web page and as attachments to e-mails.

Besides replication, some viruses have something else in common: their infecting routine. The behaviors of viruses vary from showing messages or images to destroying files, formatting the hard disk drive and other severe damage. If the virus does not inflict damage it can still cause problems by taking up space and memory, lowering the performances of the computer.

Nine rules for avoiding computer viruses would be:

If you find yourself confused by what you've read to this point, don't despair. Everything should be crystal clear by the time you finish.

1. Use an anti virus program at all times.

2. Install and keep active a firewall.

3. Make sure your system is up-to-date with all the existent updates.

4. Keep your browsers security settings at maximum.

5. Never click yes when your browser asks you if you want to install or open some content coming from an organization you don't know or don't trust.

6. Install an anti-spy ware program to enlarge the protection.

7. Never install a browser help or search bar accepting the times it comes from a reliable source.

8. Use a different credit card for online shopping.

9. Don't click on email attachments that are executable files even if they look as if sent from known persons.

The antivirus programs have a big role in providing your computers security and protecting it from viruses, worms, Trojan horses and other "invaders" that can attack a computer. The role of an antivirus program is to detect the presence of viruses in a computer, to disinfect the files or delete the ones that can't be disinfected and prevent the contamination of the computer.

Most of the companies that produce antivirus have online free tools for scanning computers for viruses. If you don't have an antivirus yet and can't decide which one to buy you can enter their online sites and try the services for free, then decide what to use.

That's how things stand right now. Keep in mind that any subject can change over time, so be sure you keep up with the latest computer virus news.

If a Device Doesn’t Work, Try Updating Its Driver

When installing a new device, and it doesn’t work, don’t automatically assume that the device is defective.

The problem is more likely to be a driver issue, especially if you are running a different Windows version than the driver was specifically written for.

Visit the device manufacturer’s Web site and download any updated drivers or patches and install them.

Only after you have installed the most recent driver and software versions should you seriously suspect a physical problem with the hardware.

If you can’t make a new device work, don’t be shy about calling the toll-free support line for the hardware manufacturer.

Their telephone support technicians will be aware of any late-breaking issues with the device, and if they can’t help you make it work they can direct you to the Returns department.

How to reformat boot disk and hard disk?

Whenever an error occurs in an operating system or any important programs or whenever system collapses. The question arising is, is there any boot disk? Some people ask booting disk! What is this all about? Others feel for not creating such things.

To avoid you from facing this problem try this tip.

What is boot disk?

A boot disk & booting disk is all the same. These are not different. Basically the disks that consist of programs, which help a computer to function and startup, are called a boot disk. Mostly the computer boots from their hard disk only. We go for boot disk only when there is the problem in the hard disk. A boot disk can be a floppy disk, ACD, or DVD. For a boot disk to perform its function it should consist of files. Computer should know to understand and accept this files. The disk should consist of all O/S files or at least essential O/S files.

When and how you will use boot disk?

Whenever the operating system or the files of operating system in hard drive does not get loaded properly in to the memory, we use boot disk. How this happens? This happens when the system is not able to read OS files in the hard drive due to data blocks or due to some other error. The data block can be remove using the disk repair or the hard drive can be formatted and the operating system can be reinstalled.

Our friends suggest reformatting the disk whenever small errors are taking place. But before reformatting think carefully and act.

First of all what is formatting?

We can see what happens when it is done. When we start to reformat. Its start from the hard disk of the computer. We here only important information in the computer is saved. Any way it becomes like clean state after you have reformatted. Some people would reformat their disk ones in 6 months or a year. This is the good idea but not essential one as some IT companies will provide boot disk or installation CD this will help us to reformat, because of this computer attains the state when it first came to you whenever you can do a reformat whenever or program crashes without any explanation and the computer collapses and all or measures to repair it fails you can reformat. There are 5 stages in the reformatting. I will explain the basic stages here.

1. First of all you have to take a backup of all the files in the hard drive of or computer. Here the files means not only that data files and also program files, application files, software files, the favorite website addresses and e-mail are to be back up. You have to remove the unwanted files from you are system no need of back up such unwanted files.

2. Next you have to create a boot disk in the case of you don’t have boot disk. You have to select the boot disk as floppy or CD according to your computer and check the boot disk it correct or not because its important for next stage.

3. In the third stage is little more confused don’t work. It’s easy when we understand .In this stage we have to reformat and partition the hard disk partition means dividing the hard disk for our facility. Due to this we can handle the drive partitions. Depends upon our file types. When we reformat the drive the files and in formations are fully deleted, so that only we create the back up. When we partition the hard disk its ready to get the files.

4. The major part of formatting the hard disk is finishes after that we have to installed all the programs first of all we have to install OS for that we should have installation CD feed the CD into the drive and install. It as per the commands

After that you have to install the programs and copy the files from your back up. After finishing this you get a Internet connection to view your favorite website and listen music your hard drive get new look you can use your computer as new.

5. The above all basic hints only it explain the common stages in the process.

Do you want to know briefly you can get it from websites? It contains more explanation and pictures. Down load it to read.

TRICK #1

An Indian discovered that nobody can create a FOLDER anywhere on the computer which can be named as "CON". This is something pretty cool...and unbelievable. At Microsoft the whole Team, couldn't answer why this happened!

TRY IT NOW, IT WILL NOT CREATE "CON" FOLDER
